Busy busy busy (31/01/2016)

I have just finished my first complete day at Haywire.

It’s 11:16 Local Canberra time and I am almost ready to collapse.

I am currently residing at the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport)

Waking up early and preparing for breakfast, at first, seemed rather daunting. I wasn’t sure who to sit with, who to talk to and who to not make eye contact with. Little did I know, that neither of these questions were relevant.

To my surprise, all the Heywire Regional Winners were mostly - nothing but nice.

We began our morning with team building skills where we worked in groups to build and develop a withstanding, stable structure to which we would then communicate with the rest of the cohort how we worked together.

After shameishly destroying our structure we went around the room and met one another. As we sat in new groups, with more random faces, we discussed issues which we wished to change, ones we wanted to but knew we couldn’t and things that we love about our country.

I was astounded by the depth and connection that was shared to one another through conversations of problems and solutions we are passionate about. This environment was so inspiring and enthusiastic that it pushed me to be a better person.

After expressing our thoughts on agriculture, racism, religious war and personal stories, we were given the opportunity to start our groups to begin brainstorming ideas to pitch for our speech at parliament. I was so blessed to be able to receive the topic I had entered this competition wanting - drugs - a topic I am so passionate about sharing

I am slightly anxious about pitching my idea and being battled against in order to change the plans I had, though I am open for new ideas.

After getting our groups sorted we headed out on a bus travel to Lake Burley Griffith where we rode our bikes along the sidewalk and admired the beautiful scenery of Canberra.

The Museum was on display as was the many adorable dogs that were being walked.

The laughter produced between myself and people I had only officially met today, riding down yet again, another amazing city, made me realise that this is the life I am living. The life I am pushing to move forward in.

My hopes, goals, desires and dreams are finally being put to the test and I am given the opportunity to make change in my home town.

This experience already, within 24 hours, is the most astonishing thing so far. I am so stoked for what the future has in store for me and I just can’t believe the energy these people from across rural and city Australia has brought to their community and myself already.

P.S Canberra was absolutely freezing today!
